Summer Select 94 MS forage sorghum is an economical one cut forage option that produces large amounts of high energy forage. This male sterile forage sorghum will outperform the competition in yield and disease resistance while providing great seedling vigor. It is not uncommon to see sugar levels of the 94 MS forage above 15%.

  • Cut and Carry – not the recommended harvest strategy for this hybrid. Though this is possible with proper management
  • Grazing – most popular after initial silage harvest, on the ratooned crop
  • Silage – the large amounts of digestible energy coming from the high quality fiber in 94 MS, provide a very high energy forage with a very high sugar concentration. It is recommended to allow this hybrid to develop through the boot stage to receive the ultimate amount of sugars, as they translocate throughout the stalk. With the high sugar concentration, it can be expected that this forage will ferment and cool down very rapidly when properly packed in storage.

Seeding Information:

  • Soil temperature of 60 F and climbing
  • Average seeds/pound: 16,000-18,000
  • Planting depth should be 1½-2 in., depending on soil moisture
  • Follow recommended seeding rates for your area:

Higher moisture areas: 100,000-150,000/acre
High plains (lower moisture): 150,000-200,000/acre

Higher populations than recommended above may have negative lodging results

  • Can be no-tilled into stubble of winter and spring crops
  • Do not plant in soil with pH greater than 7.5 as Iron Chlorosis can be a problem


  • Please test your soil!
  • Under favorable conditions, 1-1¼ lbs. of nitrogen per day of planned growth should be available for ultimate growth, with little risk for nitrate poisoning. For example, for a planned 94 day harvest, 94-117 lbs. of nitrogen should be available.
  • Potassium levels should be maintained similar to that of corn
  • If soil pH is greater than 7.2, an application of iron may be necessary to prevent iron chlorosis
  • Exceeding the recommended fertility above may have negative lodging results

Avoiding Nitrate and Prussic Acid Poisoning:

  • Do not harvest drought stricken plants within four days following a heavy rain
  • Do not apply nitrogen prior to expected drought periods
  • If in doubt, cut at higher stubble height as nitrates tend to accumulate in the lower stalk
  • If high prussic acid is found, wait one month prior to feeding. Unlike excessive nitrates, prussic acid will escape from the plant over time.


  • Harvest about 14-21 days following head development
  • Moisture levels should be between 68%-72% H20, allowing this high quality forage to ferment very quickly
  • Cutting height: for optimum regrowth (ratooning), crop should be harvested leaving 2 nodes or approximately 6-8 in. of plant material
  • Use sharp blades- a clean cutting will enhance regrowth * Ideal chop length is at 1-1¼ in.
  • Quality levels, including NDFd, protein and available starch, will decline if crop is harvested after the recommended stage of maturity
